The purposes of this study were to investigate 1) the effects of childhood interpersonal trauma experience on insecure adult attachment; and 2) the mediating effects of internalized shame in the relationship between childhood interpersonal trauma experience and insecure adult attachment. A total of 142 participants who live in Korea completed a self-reported survey online. The age of the participant ranged from 19 to 40. The collected data were analyzed using frequency analysis, descriptive statistics analysis, Pearson's correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis through SPSS 28.0. The findings of the study were as follows. First, there was a significant positive (+) correlation between all variables; and a positive (+) correlation between the sub-factors of each variable. Second, internalized shame was found to have a partial mediating effect on the relationship between childhood interpersonal trauma experience and unstable adult attachment. The present study showed that if the level of insecure adult attachment is high, there is a lot of childhood interpersonal trauma experience, and the level of internalized shame could be high. The current study¡¯s findings can help counselors broaden their understanding clients with insecure adult attachment. Also, the findings suggest that counselors should consider the client¡¯s interpersonal trauma and internalized shame when they develop counseling treatment plans.
